Pet Friendly Outer Banks
✓ Pet policies read on each company’s and hotel’s own site — October 2026

Nobody down here closes the beach to him, because there’s nobody to do it. Hatteras Island is forty-odd miles of barrier island with seven villages and almost all of the sand in between belonging to the National Seashore. One federal rule, all year: keep him on a leash. No summer hours, no seasonal ban, and more empty beach per dog than anywhere else on the East Coast. The houses are where the choices are, so this page is about those.

The beach rule, the Pea Island trap on the drive down and the lifeguarded stretches are on Hatteras Island with a dog →.

The island’s companies, and what the dog costs

Hatteras has its own rental companies, mostly based in the villages, plus two coast-wide operators that run this far south. Read on their own policy pages:

CompanyPublished pet feeThe limit to know
Surf or Sound Realty$200 per dog per week + taxTwo dogs, dogs only; $400 for an undeclared dog
Midgett RealtyNot published, on the listingPer listing; not left alone uncrated
Hatteras RealtyNot published, on the listingPer listing. Outer Beaches Realty merged into it in 2022, so don’t go looking for that name
Seaside Vacations$175 per dog per week + taxTwo dogs, no cats, 75 lb per dog, mature dogs only
Sun RealtyNot published, on the listingCorolla to Hatteras; per listing

Surf or Sound’s fee is the highest published number on the coast; the island companies that don’t publish one put it on the individual house instead. The full table for every company on the coast, with sources: the fee, company by company →

Two things to settle before you fall for a photo: the weight cap at Seaside rules out a lot of family dogs, and the undeclared-dog penalties here are real money. Declare him, pay the fee, and the island is easy.

Shopping on a booking site instead? How the pet filters and fees really work on Airbnb and Vrbo, and when it pays to book the same house direct.

Which village

Same beach rule everywhere on the Seashore, so pick the village on what else you want:

  • Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo — the first three villages after the refuge, the closest to the rest of the Banks, and the ones with the kiteboarders. Rodanthe has a lifeguarded beach in season; walk him north or south of it. Rodanthe’s one motel says no to pets, so down here it’s a house.
  • Avon — the biggest of the villages, with a full grocery store. Avon Motel is listed as dog-friendly elsewhere but its own site says nothing, so that one is a phone call.
  • Buxton and Frisco — the lighthouse, the point, and four of the island’s six dog-friendly hotels. Lighthouse Beach and Frisco have lifeguards in season; the rest is open. The island’s one veterinarian is in Buxton too, open four days a week and closed Wednesdays and weekends, which is worth knowing before a Saturday-to-Saturday rental. The vet ladder →
  • Hatteras village — the end of the road and the free ferry to Ocracoke, which takes him on deck. Two hotels take dogs here, in specific rooms. Thinking about the next island? →

The week, in four lines

  • On a leash, everywhere on the Seashore, every day. Off the guarded beaches in season and out of the posted closures.
  • Thirteen miles of the drive down is Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, a different agency: leashed, and not on the sound side of North Carolina Highway 12 at all.
  • The sound is the good dog water: calm, shallow, warm by August. Kayaking with him, and who rents to dogs →
  • He can be sworn in as a B.A.R.K. Ranger at the Seashore, free, in about an hour. How →

If the week includes a day up the beach, the one he’ll remember is at the other end of the Banks. North of Corolla the pavement ends and the beach is the road: wild horses in the yards, eleven miles of sand to the Virginia line, and no seasonal rule on dogs. Carova with a dog, or rent a 4x4 in Kill Devil Hills that takes him at no extra charge, with the Off-Roading with Fido game included.

Questions people ask before they book

Which rental companies have pet-friendly houses on Hatteras Island?
Surf or Sound Realty ($200 per dog per week plus tax, two dogs, dogs only, $400 for an undeclared dog), Midgett Realty and Hatteras Realty (fee on the individual listing; Midgett asks that he isn’t left alone uncrated), Sun Realty and Seaside Vacations (both run from Corolla through Hatteras; Seaside publishes $175 per dog per week with a 75 lb cap). Outer Beaches Realty merged into Hatteras Realty in 2022.
Can my dog go on the beach on Hatteras Island in summer?
Yes, all day, every day, on a leash. Almost all of the island’s beach is Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Seashore has one rule year-round. He stays off the lifeguarded beaches while they’re staffed in season (Rodanthe, Lighthouse Beach in Buxton and Frisco) and out of posted nesting closures; the other sixty-odd miles are open.
Are there pet-friendly hotels on Hatteras Island?
Six take dogs: four in Buxton (Cape Hatteras Motel, Cape Pines Motel, Lighthouse View, Outer Banks Motel) and two in Hatteras village (Breakwater Inn, Sea Gull Motel). Most restrict dogs to certain rooms or cottages and several won’t release a pet room to a booking site, so phone them. Rodanthe’s only motel and the Inn on Pamlico Sound in Buxton say no.
