Kill Devil Hills has the strictest summer beach rule on the coast and the best dog park on it, and if you book here in July they’re the same sentence. In the town’s own words: from Memorial Day to Labor Day, no dogs on the public beach between 9am and 6pm. The town takes the middle of his beach day away, and hands you somewhere better than usual to spend it. Book it knowing that and KDH is a fine week. Book it not knowing and you’ll be the family we see every July, standing at the access at eleven with a dog and a sign.
The rule, the park and how to run a KDH day are on Kill Devil Hills with a dog →. This page is how to pick the house so the rule costs you nothing.
Three ways a KDH house works for a dog
- Book it for the park and the price. Mary’s Paws Park at Aviation Park, 103 Veterans Drive: three fenced areas including one for senior dogs, shade, water, obstacles and a dog washing station, free. Use the beach at seven in the morning and after six, spend the hot middle at the park or under the Memorial, and the rule has cost you almost nothing.
- Book a house with a private pool. In most towns a pool is a luxury. In KDH in summer it’s the solution: the dog can’t be on the sand from nine to six, and the family can be in the pool. Check that the house actually lets him on the pool deck, because plenty of pet-friendly pool houses don’t. What to ask before you book a pool house →
- Or book the next town up or down. Kitty Hawk, immediately north, never closes its beach to him. Nags Head, five minutes south, never does either. If the whole point of the week is the dog on the sand at two in the afternoon, Nags Head or Kitty Hawk is the honest answer, and this page would rather tell you than sell you.
Off-season, forget all of the above: from the day after Labor Day to Memorial Day he’s on the KDH beach all day, on a leash, and the town is simply the central, well-stocked, well-priced place it is.
The companies, and what the dog costs
| Company | Published pet fee | The limit to know |
|---|---|---|
| Joe Lamb Jr. & Associates | $150 + tax per dog | One dog unless approved, dogs only; breed restrictions; $500 for an undeclared dog |
| Beach Realty | $150 + tax unless the listing says otherwise | Two adult dogs, no puppies; no Rottweilers, Pit Bulls or Dobermans |
| Village Realty | Non-refundable weekly fee, amount per listing | Two pets; cats at some houses |
| Atlantic Realty | Per dog, amount per listing | Usually two dogs |
| Outer Banks Blue | On the listing | Central beaches |
| Sun Realty | Not published, on the listing | Per listing |
The same central-beaches companies cover Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, so if the KDH rule puts you off, the same office can move you a mile either way. The full table for every company on the coast, with sources: the fee, company by company →

The motels: nearly all of them say yes
The independent motel inventory of the northern Outer Banks is essentially all in Kill Devil Hills, and almost every one takes dogs. A few that stand out, read off their own sites:
| Hotel | Pet fee | What they say |
|---|---|---|
| John Yancey Oceanfront Inn | $40 per dog, per day | 99 lb limit, two dogs per room. The friendliest door on the beach for a big dog. |
| TownePlace Suites by Marriott | $100 per stay, non-refundable | Two pets, no weight limit published. |
| Comfort Inn On the Ocean | $25 per night, per pet + tax | Two pets, cats or dogs, limited rooms; call ahead. |
| Sea Ranch Resort | $50 first dog, $25 second, per night | Dogs only; they won’t release a dog room to a booking site, so book direct. |
| Outer Banks Motor Lodge | $25 per pet, per night | Rooms 140–143 are the whole dog inventory. Book early. |
| Home2 Suites and Spark by Hilton | $75 per pet for 1–4 nights, $125 for 5+ | Two pets, 50 lb limit at both, lower than the Hiltons up the beach. |
Fourteen KDH properties in all take dogs; three say no. Every one of them, with the fees → Remember the beach rule applies to the hotel’s sand too: the Ramada Plaza says Nags Head in its name and sits in Kill Devil Hills.
Oceanfront in KDH, honestly
Oceanfront here buys a view of a beach he can’t use between nine and six in season. Coffee on the deck at seven with him on the sand below is still lovely; just don’t pay the oceanfront premium thinking it buys the whole day. If that’s what you want, pay it one town south.
And the day he’ll remember starts here: our 4x4s are picked up in Kill Devil Hills. North of Corolla the pavement ends and the beach is the road: wild horses in the yards, eleven miles of sand to the Virginia line, and no seasonal rule on dogs. Carova with a dog, or rent a 4x4 in Kill Devil Hills that takes him at no extra charge, with the Off-Roading with Fido game included.
Questions people ask before they book
- Can my dog go on the beach if I rent in Kill Devil Hills?
- In summer, mornings and evenings only. Kill Devil Hills bars dogs from its public beach between 9am and 6pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day; at all other times he’s welcome on a leash. Nags Head, five minutes south, has no such rule, so a KDH house with a car gets the full-day beach a short drive away.
- Why rent in Kill Devil Hills with a dog at all, then?
- Three reasons: Mary’s Paws Park at Aviation Park is the best dog park on the Outer Banks, with three separate areas, shade, water and a dog washing station; the town has the biggest spread of dog-friendly motels on the coast, most at $25–$50 a night for the dog; and a house with a private pool turns the nine-to-six rule into a non-event. Off-season there’s no rule at all.
- Which companies have pet-friendly houses in Kill Devil Hills?
- Joe Lamb Jr. & Associates ($150 plus tax per dog), Beach Realty ($150 plus tax unless the listing says otherwise, published breed bans), Village Realty, Sun Realty, Outer Banks Blue and Atlantic Realty (fee on the individual listing). All keep a pet-friendly filter.
