Pet Friendly Outer Banks
✓ Pet policies read on each company’s and hotel’s own site — October 2026

Kitty Hawk is the quiet one, and that’s the point. It never closes its beach to a dog, not for an hour, not for a season, which puts it in a club of four towns on this coast and makes it the only one of the four with three veterinary hospitals inside the town line. Out of season it goes further than any town but Duck and lets him off the leash. If you want a sensible, central, no-drama week with a dog, this is where to point the search.

The rules, the woods trail and the strange hour on the town line are on Kitty Hawk with a dog →. This page is about the house.

Who rents here, and what the dog costs

Kitty Hawk sits in the middle of the beach, so every central-beaches company has houses here. The ones with a published pet policy, read on their own sites:

CompanyPublished pet feeThe limit to know
Joe Lamb Jr. & Associates$150 + tax per dogOne dog unless approved, dogs only, no “vicious propensity” breeds; $500 if an undeclared dog is found; the rabies tag goes on the dog
Beach Realty$150 + tax unless the listing says otherwiseTwo adult dogs, dogs only, no puppies; no Rottweilers, Pit Bulls or Dobermans
Village RealtyNon-refundable weekly fee, amount per listingTwo pets; cats accepted at some houses
Sun RealtyNot published, on the listingPer listing
Southern Shores RealtyOn the listingThe northern towns’ longtime operator

Kitty Hawk through Nags Head has been Joe Lamb country since the 1960s, and Beach Realty is the other old name here. The full table for every company on the coast, with sources: the fee, company by company →

What those limits mean in practice: a 75-pound dog is fine with any of them, two dogs need Beach Realty or Village rather than Joe Lamb unless you ask first, and a dog on a breed list needs to look elsewhere. None of this is hidden, which is the nicest thing about the established companies here.

Two hotels, both chains, both yes

HotelPet feeWhat they say
Hilton Garden Inn Outer Banks/Kitty Hawk$75 for 1–4 nights, $125 for 5+Two pets, dogs or cats, 75 lb limit. The per-stay fee makes a week reasonable.
Holiday Inn Express Kitty Hawk$75 per nightOne dog, 75 lb. A week here costs more in pet fee than most houses; they also say plainly that emotional support animals aren’t accepted as service animals.

Cypress Moon Inn and the Hilton Vacation Club Beachwoods both say no in writing. Every hotel on the coast, yes and no →

Why the town line matters more than the view

Kitty Hawk’s southern boundary is Kill Devil Hills, where a dog is barred from the beach between 9am and 6pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The sand looks identical on both sides and nothing marks the line. A house in the last few blocks of Kitty Hawk is a different summer from a house in the first few blocks of KDH, so before you fall for a listing, check the town, not just the mile post. Oceanfront in Kitty Hawk buys the whole day. Oceanfront a few hundred yards south buys mornings and evenings.

  • In season: on the leash, any hour. The summer window runs from the Friday before Memorial Day to the day after Labor Day.
  • Out of season: off the leash if he isn’t bothering anyone, you stay within 30 feet of him and the leash is on you. The beach is public, so unlike Duck you don’t need a particular house to use it.
  • The town with the vets: three animal hospitals in Kitty Hawk, which is a reason on its own to base a nervous first trip here. Who to call, and when →
  • Kitty Hawk Woods: an 1,800-acre maritime forest behind the town and one of the better dog walks on the northern beaches, on a leash. The walk, and the rule →

From a Kitty Hawk house, the day he’ll remember is a forty-minute drive north. North of Corolla the pavement ends and the beach is the road: wild horses in the yards, eleven miles of sand to the Virginia line, and no seasonal rule on dogs. Carova with a dog, or rent a 4x4 in Kill Devil Hills that takes him at no extra charge, with the Off-Roading with Fido game included.

Next door: Kill Devil Hills for the dog park and the motels, Nags Head for the other all-day beach, Duck for the off-leash one.

Questions people ask before they book

Is Kitty Hawk a good town to rent in with a dog?
One of the best on the northern beaches. The town never closes its sand to dogs, not one hour of one day, all year. In summer he’s on a leash; from the day after Labor Day to the Friday before Memorial Day he can be off it, as long as he isn’t bothering anyone, you stay within 30 feet of him and you have the leash with you. And the town has three veterinary hospitals, which no other Outer Banks town can say.
Which rental companies have pet-friendly houses in Kitty Hawk?
Joe Lamb Jr. & Associates ($150 plus tax per dog, one dog unless approved, dogs only), Beach Realty ($150 plus tax unless the listing says otherwise, two adult dogs, no puppies, and published breed bans), Village Realty and Sun Realty (fee on the individual listing), plus Southern Shores Realty. All of them keep a pet-friendly filter.
Do any Kitty Hawk hotels take dogs?
Two: the Hilton Garden Inn Outer Banks/Kitty Hawk ($75 for one to four nights, $125 for five or more, two pets, 75 lb limit) and the Holiday Inn Express Kitty Hawk ($75 per night, one dog, 75 lb). The town’s independents have mostly gone, and two Kitty Hawk properties refuse pets in writing.
