Pet Friendly Outer Banks
✓ Pet policies read on each company’s and hotel’s own site — October 2026

In Duck, the house is the beach pass. This is the only town on the Outer Banks where a dog can legally run with no leash on him, any month of the year, and it’s the one town where you can’t simply drive up and use the sand: the Town owns no public access and no public parking, and every way onto the beach belongs to a neighborhood or a resort. Rent in Duck and the off-leash beach comes with the keys. Don’t, and it doesn’t. That makes the lodging decision here the whole decision.

The companies, and what the dog costs

Duck is the northern beaches, so it’s Twiddy and Carolina Designs country, with the central companies reaching up as far as the town. Read on their own policy pages:

Twiddy’s no-fee policy makes it the first stop for most dog owners booking Duck, and its inventory here is large. The full table for every company on the coast, with sources: the fee, company by company →

One Duck-specific question to ask whichever company you use: which community access does this house use, and is it a walk or a drive? Some Duck neighborhoods are oceanfront with the access at the end of the street; some are soundside with a boardwalk or a short drive to a community lot. For a dog you’ll be taking out at seven in the morning, the difference is real.

The one hotel

HotelPet feeWhat they say
Sanderling Resort$300 per stay (guest rooms), $400 (residences)Two dogs, each under 60 lb, non-refundable, added at check-in. The steepest pet fee on the coast, and the only hotel whose beach is off-leash legal.

What the house unlocks, and what it doesn’t

  • On the beach: off the leash all year, under your control, in the Town’s words “under the watchful eye and control of a guardian.” He stays within sight and sound of you and comes when called. If he doesn’t do that yet, Duck won’t teach him.
  • Off the beach: the leash goes back on everywhere else in town, with a collar, ID and a current rabies vaccination. The Town also asks you not to bury waste in the sand.
  • The public part, for everyone: the eleven-acre Town Park and the soundside boardwalk, the better part of a mile of it, with restaurant decks along the way that take a dog. You don’t need a Duck house for any of that.
  • The sound side: calm, shallow and warm by August, and the better water for a dog who won’t face the surf. A soundfront Duck house with its own little beach on the Currituck is about as good as a dog week gets here.

And the day he’ll remember is half an hour north. North of Corolla the pavement ends and the beach is the road: wild horses in the yards, eleven miles of sand to the Virginia line, and no seasonal rule on dogs. Carova with a dog, or rent a 4x4 in Kill Devil Hills that takes him at no extra charge, with the Off-Roading with Fido game included.

If the off-leash part doesn’t matter to you, Corolla next door has the same all-day beach on a leash, public accesses and a no-fee company. Out of season, Kitty Hawk lets him off the leash too, on a public beach.

Questions people ask before they book

Why does renting in Duck matter so much for a dog?
Because Duck’s beach is the only sand on the Outer Banks where a dog can legally be off the leash, any time of year, under your control, and the town owns no public access or public parking to it. The beach is reached through privately owned community accesses, open to Duck residents, Duck renters and their guests. The house is what gets him onto it.
Which companies rent pet-friendly houses in Duck?
Twiddy & Company (no pet fee, up to two pets), Carolina Designs (fee per house, some weight limits), Brindley Beach (fee per house, two dogs, 60 lb), Resort Realty (non-refundable fee on the listing, two adult dogs), KEES Outer Banks and Southern Shores Realty (fee on the listing).
Is there a dog-friendly hotel in Duck?
One, the Sanderling Resort, and it charges accordingly: $300 per stay for guest rooms and $400 for the residences, two dogs under 60 lb each, non-refundable, added at check-in. It is the steepest pet fee on the coast, and the only hotel whose beach he can walk off the leash.
